Choosing Ceramic Tile | Decorative Ceramic Tile

You Can Use Decorative Ceramic TileJust About Anywhere

Decorative ceramic tile does indeed have many applications in the home, but let's take a look first at ceramic tile itself. There are many different kinds, both in the way it is made, and in its appearance. This variety in turn leads to a plethora of decorative applications.

How decorative ceramic tiles are made

A ceramic is a material made from clay, and often a variety of other substances, including sand. It is first molded into the desired shape, which is usually flat for ceramic tile. Then it is fired in an oven or kiln at very high temperatures, between 900 and 1400 degrees Celsius. On cooling, the material becomes a hard, durable substance, composed mainly of oxides of aluminum and silicon in a crystalline state.

There are two main types of ceramics. Glazed ceramics have a coating of metallic oxides or ceramic stain that is applied before the final firing. The result is a shiny surface that can have a variety of colors, or even a design or picture. In unglazed tiles, the color comes directly from the clay, and varies from white to red. Quarry tiles and terra-cotta tiles are unglazed.

Porcelain tiles can be either glazed or unglazed, and their unusual hardness and shine comes from the glass that is formed throughout the tile due to the extremely high temperatures of firing.

Pros and cons of ceramic tiling

The reason why decorative ceramic tiles are used in so many different ways is that they have so many desirable properties. They are:

      durable
        noncombustible
        don't fade
        don't stain
        don't warp
can be made waterproof by sealing or glazing
are hygienic, since they don't harbor dust or mites
can be made to resemble stone, and cost a lot less
        can match any room decor

The only con I can think of is that they might be a bit slippery if used for flooring.

How decorative ceramic tile can be used in the home

Most ceramic tiles are made to be used for flooring, but they can also be used for surfaces, such as countertops or vanity tops. They can even be used on walls for shower stalls, wainscoting, backsplashes, or decorative frames around fireplaces or windows. And glazed ceramic tiles are used to line bathtubs and swimming pools, since they are waterproof.

The latest trend is to use ceramic tiles to make murals. These "wall pictures" can be mosaics, which are designs made from small tiles arranged in a pattern. Or larger tiles can be decorated with scenes before being given the final firing, and then arranged on a wall to form a larger...

Choosing A Bathroom Medicine Cabinet | Bathroom Medicine Cabinets

Choose A Bathroom Medicine CabinetTo Fit Your Decor

Bathroom medicine cabinets are those things with a mirror that go on the wall, traditionally above bathroom sinks. Choosing a medicine cabinet involves more than just getting one that satisfies your need for a space in which to store your medicines. As a room furnishing, it will be a part of, and have an influence on your total bathroom decor.

When you are decorating your bathroom, whether you are fitting out a new home or redecorating an older one, you need to take several things into consideration. First, you bathroom must be highly functional. It is a room in which most people spend very little time, but has several important uses that must be accommodated.

All bathrooms, even small hall closets, must have at least a toilet and sink. And a complete bathroom needs to have a tub or shower in which to bathe. These fixtures should all blend harmoniously into a whole which is both useable and aesthetically pleasing.

Before you can decide on a bathroom medicine cabinet, you need to decide on a theme for the entire room. What will be your style and color scheme? If you are redecorating an existing bathroom, but not installing new fixtures, their style and color will obviously greatly influence your choice ofbathroom wall cabinett.

Once you have decided on a general look, then you can begin to choose this important, but often ignored, item of furniture. Your first decision will depend on whether you are also installing a new sink or using the one that's already there. In the former case, you may want to purchase a coordinated bathroom vanity set. In addition to a bathroom wall cabinet, such a set consists of a "vanity", which holds the sink, and contains a cabinet and drawers for storage.

Next, you must choose where you are going to mount the cabinet.

Will it be located in a corner or in the interior wall space?
Is it going to be mounted on the surface of the wall, or recessed?

And finally, we come to picking out the style. Many types of bathroom wall cabinets are available:

	Mirrored or mirrorless.
	Framed or frameless.
	Rectangular or oval shape.
	Single or multiple door.
	Modern style or vintage.
	Factory-made or handcrafted.

All of the choices above, and more, will be discussed further on the other pages of this website. By adhering closely to the principles of design, you can be assured that your new bathroom medicine cabinet will be something in which you can take great pleasure and...

How to Track a Cell Phone

How to Track a Cell Phone

by Chad Melius

March 21, 2013

There are billions of cell phone users all over the world. Cell phones are portable devices that enable us to communicate very easily. Their very portability, however, can lead to problems. It is of grave concern when we have no idea where our loved ones are located.

The good thing is that cell phones can be tracked, and used to pinpoint the exact location of the user. Are you concerned about your child, and want to know where they are for your peace of mind? There are ways that you can keep track of their movement, without calling them up every second, or playing the nosy parent.

      GPS Cell Phone Tracking

This is the easiest way to keep tabs on someone. The Global Positioning System, otherwise known as GPS, is commonly found on mobile devices. The GPS on any cell phone can be easily tracked by satellites that encircle the earth. The phone's precise location is determined by the intersection of imaginary lines that are drawn from each satellite in the direction from which the signal is coming.

By utilizing this data, a cell phone user can be pinned down to within an amazing radius of 5 meters. If the phone has no GPS features, you can install GPS tracking software on it. Most service providers would gladly render this service, as long as you provide them with a valid reason why they should do it.

      Tracking by IMEI Number

Another way of tracking a cell phone location is by using the IMEI number. The International Mobile Equipment Identity number is a special number given to all GMS and WCDMA handsets for the purpose of verification. There are 2 ways to find the IMEI number of a handset. You can open the battery cover and find the 16 or 17 digit number printed underneath the battery area, or you can dial star-hash 06 hash on the phone and see the IMEI number on the screen.

You may have some difficulty gaining access to the cell phone you want to track, but when you have an opportunity, grab it! Then give the IMEI number to the phone's service provider. They can use it to track the phone by triangulation. But again, you will need a good reason for them to provide this service for you.

Use the Online Sevice of Your Wireless Provider

Some cell phone services have a phone locating service for families to use to in locating their children. For instatnce, Sprint has "Family Locate" and AT&T has "Family Map". They can set up an account for you in minutes, but it is not as accurate as GPS tracking.

      Commercial Websites

There are independent businesses that offer alternatives when it comes to pinpointing the exact location of a cell phone user. They use advanced software to peg down a locality using data obtained from the service providers. When you register with one of these sites, you will get an ID and password to use. You can login any time to keep track of a mobile phone on a map that is provided by the site.

In addition to tracking the locaton of a cell phone, some of these services will also log all inbound and outbound calls, record every text message that is sent or received, and save every picture or video taken by the phone.

So what are you waiting for? Install your cell phone spying software now!Check out:

How to block caller ID

How to Block Caller ID
      by Chad Melius
      February 20, 2013

5 Ways to Keep Your Information Private

In this modern age, it is very difficult to maintain any form of privacy. All someone needs is your phone number, and your life and personal information are available for public view.

This is very risky because telemarketers, and even fraudsters, can access your private information and use it as they will. The world today is now digitalized, with information available at the snap of a finger. Private details of your life can be revealed by someone simply making a phone call.

One of the ways that you can protect your privacy is to block caller ID. This makes it impossible for any company or person to capture your number with an automated service. You need to do this, especially when you are just inquiring about something and don't want to give away your phone number willingly. Here are some ways you can protect your privacy:

Per Call ID Block. You must do this before you make any call. Simply dial *67, and your number will not be displayed on the called party's phone. This is a very simple method, and it its 100% legal. If this is not already installed on your phone, you will need to contact your phone company. In order to unblock your line, simply dial *82.
Use a pay phone. You are almost certain to remain anonymous when you use a payphone. This method sets you back 25 or 35 cents. It also takes you out of your comfort zone into the street to use a public phone. Phone booths are under camera surveillance, so unless you are doing something illegal or criminal, you have nothing to worry about.
Use a throw-away cell phone. Buy a pre-paid cell phone that you can dispose of once you have made a few calls. Make sure that you purchase it with cash only - not a credit card, which will leave a paper trail that will lead right to you.
Use a spoofing service. This type of service is not cheap, but it ensures that your privacy is not jeopardized. You get a special calling card that blocks your line and allows you to make anonymous calls. Spoofing services are in high demand, and can be used with any type of telephone. It works by allowing you to choose any number you want. This number shows up on another person's caller ID when you make your call. You can even change your voice tone, and pre-record conversations as well.
Place calls via the internet. When you make a phone call using a computer, it goes through a proxy server that blocks your caller ID. Your calls can only be traced back by an Internet Service Provider if you are being investigated for criminal activity by the law. If subpoenaed, the provider can release the IP address that made the phone call. So depending on the exact reason why you are hiding your number, using a personal computer may not be a good idea.

Government Public Records | Sex Offenders

Find Sex Offenders

There are different types of sex offenders, the most dangerous being rapists and child molesters. This article will discuss what public records are available and what information they provide about these criminals.

Where can I find these records?

The National Sex Offender Public Website is a registry that combines information from all states, territories, and tribes. It can be searched by name and/or zip code, or address radius. Its purpose is to help make it easy for anyone to gather information about convicted offenders, in the hope that this will help curtail their further activity.

Every state also keeps its own records on sex crimes, gathering information from local government agencies about criminal charges, convictions, and incarcerations. The type of information available differs with each state.

Why might I need to see these records?

If you are a parent of a school age child, you can find out if there are any sexual predators living in your neighborhood. Some local registries might also offer to provide alerts whenever a known child molester moves into town.

If you are in charge of hiring employees for an agency caring for disabled or elderly persons, or for a child day care center, you should certainly check the records before you hire someone you don't know personally.

What can I find in these records?

The actual information available to the public is set by each state, so not all of the information mentioned below will be available in every state.

    Name and address.
      Level of offense: numbered from 1 ( e.g. - public exposure ) to 3 ( e.g. - sexual assault )
Charges filed, convictions, time and place of incarceration.
      Mug shots and description.
Restrictions imposed, such as not being allowed within 1000 feet of a school.
What is being done to prevent these offenders from committing future crimes?

In recent years, three federal laws have been enacted regarding registration of sexual criminals:

Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Act, 1994: Each state is required to have registration of sex criminals, and to make their addresses accessible to the public.
Megan's Law, 1996: Although enacted by Congress, each state passes its own law to notify the public whenever a conficted offender is released from prison.
Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act, 2007: This law attempts to establish some continuity between the laws of the individual states. It specifies what information must be available online about each offender. And it imposes restrictions on where they may live and areas which they must avoid.

The Adam Walsh Act also sets up the three-tier classification for offenders, and sets different required registration procedures for each tier. For example, level three offenders must update their addresses every three weeks, and must do so for the rest of their life.

What should I do if there is a sex criminal living in my area?

You can't just turn him in to the police, since he's already been convicted and has served his time. But if you happen to see him in a restricted area, you can and should report it.

Otherwise, you can be vigilant. Warn your children, show them pictures of the criminal, and make sure they know what to do if they see him. And of course, make sure that you protect your home from intrusion with some kind of alarm.

A personal note: Before publishing this article, I decided to check the NSOPW for sex offenders on the small island where I live, St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. I was astounded to find that there were 36 records listed, and two of the men live in my own neighborhood! I have never met these two criminals, so I know nothing about them. However, if I had any small children, I would certainly do a background check on them using the Public Records Guide.

Home Plumbing Repair

How to Fix a Continuously Running Toilet

A toilet that runs continuously is not only noisy. It wastes LOTS of water! Fortunately, there are some easy "fixes" that you should try first, before calling your plumber.

First let's take a look at how a flush toilet works. There are many different types of toilet flushing systems, but most of them have essentially the same functional parts.

Components that bring about the flush:
A lever connected to the toilet flush handle. This raises:
The lift chain, which in turn raises:
The flapper, which allows water to run out the bottom of the tank, and flush the bowl.

After a flush, the water level in the tank falls, which initiates a chain of events that fills the tank back up with water.

Components that fill the tank back up with water:
The fill valve prevents water from entering the tank until it is flushed.
As the water level drops, a float connected to the valve sinks, causing the valve to open.
Water flows out through the fill tube, into the overflow pipe, and thence into the tank.
When the tank is empty, the flapper drops into its valve seat, stopping the flush, and causing the water to rise again.

As the water rises, the float goes up with it, until it reaches its highest position, and shuts the input valve again.

If the water in your toilet is continually running, the problem lies with one of the components above.

How do I fix the running toilet?

Even if you are not experienced in plumbing repairs, there are several things you can do that may take care of the continually running water.

If your float is the old "ball" type, lift it up by hand. If the water stops running, this is your problem. The metal float arm attaching the ball to the input valve needs to be bent downwards. This should shut off the running water.
If that didn't fix the problem, take a wooden stick, and push down on the flapper. If the water stops, this means the flapper is not sealing properly. You should buy a new flapper of the right size. Before installing it, don't forget to first turn off the water and empty the tank.

If the two easy fixes above don't solve your running toilet, and you feel confident about your plumbing skills, by all means try other solutions. You can either use your home repair guide, or search for more advanced techniques on the...

Hot Water Heater Repair

Hot Water Heater Repair - You Can Do It Yourself

Many times, repairing a hot water heater is an easy maintenance job, and takes less time than it does to watch your favorite TV show. Why spend good money on a plumber if you don't have to? There are so many other things that a plumber's fee could be spent on, like an afternoon at the movies or a shopping trip to the mall.

Two problems commonly seen with hot water heaters include insufficient hot water, and smelly water. Both can be diagnosed and repaired with ease, so why not give it a try? You can enjoy the satisfaction of doing it yourself, and you will definitely enjoy the savings.

	Not Enough Hot Water

Nothing is more frustrating than being in the middle of a shower and running out of hot water. Your hair has shampoo in it, and it's running down into your face. Once you rinse off and get out, head on over to the tank to see if you can find the problem.

It may be that the thermostat is not properly set. If that isn't the case, your tank may need to be flushed, which takes very little time at all. If neither of these solve the problem, you are looking at someting more complicated. Spend some time reading your home repair manual to learn more about water heater repair. Many of these repairs are fairly simple - you just need to learn how to do them.

	Smelly Water

The purpose of a shower or bath is to get your body clean and remove any unpleasant odors that may result from daily activity. Yet, what do you do when the water from your faucet smells worse than you do?

This, unfortunately, is a common problem, caused by a buildup of bacteria in the water tank. Fortunately, this is pretty easy to fix.

First, drain the water from the tank. How this is done will vary from heater to heater, so you need to check your manual to determine how. Once the tank is drained, pour some hydrogen peroxide into the cold water input port. Then close the input valve again, and turn on all the faucets and outlets in the house, including those running to your major appliances. This will kill the bacteria and eliminate the smell.

	Other Problems

Before you call in your appliance repairman, do some research to see if you can easily fix the problem yourself. For example, a leaky pressure relief valve should be easy enough to repair. But if water is leaking from the tank itself, you'd better call a plumber.

	Preventive Measures

Remember that prevention is always your best friend. If you can, keep the water temperature at a minimum of 150 degrees. Don't do this if you have young kids or older people in your home as they can get burned, but if it's just teenagers and adults, this is a great way to prevent problems.

Clean your tank every six months to get rid of problems before they occur and reduce buildup in your tank. Last, but not least, if you do detect a problem, fix it immediately. Don't wait until a new tank is your only solution. Small problems can be fixed quickly and easily, even by the average...

Here's How to Make Your Own Home Repair Guide

As a homeowner, do you want to save yourself some money on doing home maintenance and repair around your house? Aren't you tired of shelling out big bucks to contractors every time something needs doing? Then you need to find a good home repair manual to show you how to do it yourself. Or you can put together your own collection of techniques and tips from many different sources.

One place to begin searching for help might be that used book store downtown. They probably have an old repair guide hiding somewhere on their shelves. Even though it might be a bit dated, there are still plenty of techniques that remain the same nowadays as they were years ago.

Another great place for a used books search is the internet. On eBay, a quick search turned up 75 results. The first - one of the so-called "idiot's guides" - had a bid of only 99 cents! And Amazon also carries a lot of used books for sale at very low prices.

If you need to find out how to repair your ten-year-old lawn mower, which is no longer in production, try one of the DIY forums that are sprouting up all over the net. You will surely find someone who knows what to do with that particular brand of mower, and will be happy to give you some help. Add this to your own rapidly-expanding repair guide.

My own personal favorite way to find what I want on the interet is to use one of the search engines. Here are three of the websites I found that have very comprehensive information on home repairs.

About.com: Home Repair - This popular website has literally hundreds of articles on various types of repairs that you can reference. It is divided into three sections: electrical, heating and cooling, and plumbing. There's even a blog with new articles posted every week.
AcmeHowTo.com - This site has a wide variety of sections, some dealing with topics not usually classified as home repairs, such as garden care, pest control, and PC repair.
DoItYourself.com - In addition to home maintenance articles, they also have some different kinds of how-to guides, like automotive repair, personal finance, and decorating. Plus, many of the topics have instructional videos, which are becoming really popular nowadays.

So there you go. That's certainly plenty of places for you to look for the information you need to put together your own unique and useful guide for home repair and...

Prank Telephone Calls

Prank Telephone Calls
      by Chad Melius
      November 15th, 2012

Prank telephone calls have been a real problem for several decades now. These pesky phone calls are perpetrated by people who are looking for fun and excitement by irritating other people who are not expecting such calls.

A typical annoying, but harmless prank call:

      Caller: "Is your refrigerator running?"
        Callee: "Yes, of course."
Caller: "Well, hurry up and catch it before it gets away!"

Here's a call I used to make myself when I was a pre-teen - calling up a drug store:

Me: "Do you have Prince Albert in a can?"
        Store Employee: "Yes, we do."
Me: "Well please let him out. He's suffocating!"

For the ones receiving prank calls, it can range from irritating to frustrating to humiliating, and sometimes even amount to emotional harassment. There are cases on record where pranksters have called hotels, posing as officials from the fire department, and causing damage by coercing employees into testing the sprinkler system.

Many years ago, it used to be easy for the prank caller to completely avoid detection - he simply hung up. With the advent of caller ID, it became more difficult, but still possible if the phone company allowed *67 to block identification. And by using VoIP, it is possible to completely avoid detection, at least without a huge amount of time and effort.

Some prank phone calls, such as those that tie up telephone lines reserved for emergency services, are serious enough to be a criminal offense in many countries. And even if made to a private number, the call may be in violation of the law. In the United States, legally, the call must have the intent to "annoy, amuse, titillate, arouse, abuse, threaten, or harass".
