Come on out and get yer yuletide on with a little Honey...This Friday (12/18) @ 10pm. HiHo Lounge 2239 St. Claude New Orleans, LaThis will be the show to see this weekend! If you're not familiar with HISB, here's a bit about them and their latest album.NEW ORLEANS MUSIC — Great music begins with great songs, and great songs are what the Honey Island Swamp Band is all about. When they formed the band, Aaron Wilkinson and Chris Mulé had already established promising songwriting careers, both individually and as a team. Collaborating with fellow songwriter and Alligator Records recording artist Eric Lindell, the two were instrumental in the writing for Lindell’s acclaimed 2008 release Low on Cash, Rich in Love. With Wishing Well, the first full-length release from Honey Island Swamp Band, both musicians bring their songwriting to new levels with their most fully-developed material to date. From the opening bars of the title track to the album’s final note, Wishing Well covers the entire landscape of southern roots music that has made the band’s live shows and eponymous 2007 EP favorites among music lovers of all genres.<img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/6392746020333599720-5712011483158558347?l=nolatunes.blogspot.com' alt=''...

Urban Blues Lecture

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 226px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Kdauni4VWmE/SsykdWy-YCI/AAAAAAAAADM/B6YNjE-bgys/s320/blues_music.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389863678298185762" />'Urban Blues' Author Charles Keil in Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Oct. 19Charles Keil, author of the book "Urban Blues," will speak on the origins of the term "blues" and its meanings through the ages. Monday, October 19, 2009 @ 7pm at The Jazz & Heritage Center (1225 N. Rampart Street). Best of all it's FREE!On Oct. 19, the Jazz & Heritage Foundation will present the latest in its Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Series. Charles Keil, an ethnomusicologist and author of the ground-breaking 1966 book "Urban Blues," will speak on the derivation of the term "blues" and its various meanings through the ages. Charles Keil is a retired professor of American studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is perhaps best known for his book "Urban Blues," first published in 1996. The book - considered to be the first serious study of the blues and blues culture, caused a considerable stir when it was first published. Keil examined the expressive role of blues bands and performers, stressing the intense interaction between artist and audience. Profiling bluesmen Bobby "Blue" Bland and B. B. King, Keil argues that they are symbols for the black community, embodying important attitudes and roles — success, strong egos, and close ties to the people. While writing "Urban Blues" in the mid-1960s, Keil optimistically saw this cultural expression as contributing to the rising tide of raised political consciousness in black America. A new Afterword examines black music in the context of capitalism and black culture in the context of worldwide trends toward diversification.<img width='1' height='1'...

The line up for that inaugural broadcast included: the Bailes Brothers, Johnnie and Jack and the Tennessee Mountain Boys with Kitty Wells, the Four Deacons, Curley Kinsley, the Tennessee Ridge Runners, Harrie Smith, the Ozark Mountaineers, the Mercy Brothers and Texas and the Texas Playboys. Over the years, the show hosted such country music greats as Jimmie Davis, Floyd Cramer, Webb Pierce and Faron Young. They were regularly joined by top artists from Texas to Tennessee, including Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, George Jones, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. The show began to fade in the early 60's due to the increase popularity of Television and the boom of Rock N Roll until it's final show in 1969.
